What should I be thankful for? This is something I ask myself often. Not because I am not normally grateful, but because I need to constantly remind myself that I am blessed.
If I wanted to go down a dark road and feel sorry for myself, I could point out every single mistake I made, complain about the things that went wrong (to my detriment), and point out my missed opportunities. We all can, really. The reason we don’t is because we would never leave our bed in the morning, much less look ourselves in the mirror. Magnifying the negatives while overlooking the positives is one of the many ways our brain can go haywire and work against the rest of the body.
So, what am I thankful for? At the very least, I ask answer this question every morning when I wake up and begin to prepare for my day. I think about and list all the things I am thankful and grateful for. “I am grateful for waking up in a warm bed, I am thankful for hot water in this shower, I am grateful for my dependable car that takes me to a job I love, etc.” I literally list as many things as I can think of and as I go down the list, I pause to really appreciate the comfort I receive from them.
Having an attitude of gratitude for everything positive in your life does something amazing when in practice from moment to moment. The mistakes and problems that come up from time to time, don’t last very long. When I review my gratitude list, I don’t beat myself up as much. I smile and appreciate others around me more. I am patient. I try harder to understand others when I disagree.
Being thankful for life and all the wonderful details in it allow me to take more risks that may bring my goals closer to me. I go out on limbs and do things that may be uncomfortable in the moment, but have a high potential for my long-term well-being. I am thankful for this laptop where am able to share this experience and message with you. I am grateful that my family is running around the house as I type this. Our home feels full of love, laughter, and life. Be thankful for what you have, where you are, for all the positive experiences that shaped your being. I'd love to hear what you are thankful for.
