The Grant Method

A Simple Framework for Transforming Your Life

It all started with a run. I didn’t need to convince myself that running was good for me—I knew it. I knew the immediate benefits: feeling energized, sleeping better, and improving my mood. I also knew the medium-term effects, like increased confidence and better eating habits, and the long-term effects, like improved health and longevity.

So, I asked myself: If I know running is so beneficial, why don’t I do it consistently? Why do I struggle to maintain habits that clearly lead to a better life? It’s easy to blame a lack of motivation, but the truth is, I am motivated by things that bring positive outcomes.

The Problem with Habit Formation Advice

Most self-improvement experts say it takes about three to four weeks to form a habit. They also suggest focusing on one habit at a time before moving on to another. But in my experience—both personally and professionally as a therapist—this doesn’t always work.

Many people, including myself, want to build multiple habits because we know they will have a dramatic impact on our lives. And often, these habits are interconnected. For example, when I go for a run, I sleep better. When I sleep better, I’m more likely to eat well, feel confident, and even engage in things like reading. Each positive behavior naturally reinforces the others.

The Power of Compounding Habits

This realization led me to a new way of thinking. If one good habit, like running, improves my life by 10%, and another habit, like getting good sleep, improves my life by another 10%, simple math would say that my life should improve by 20%.

But that’s not what happens.

Instead, these behaviors have a compounding effect. When I exercise and get good sleep, my improvement isn’t just 20%—it’s closer to 30-40%. If I then add another positive habit, like consistent learning, the impact is even greater. Each habit amplifies the effects of the others, creating exponential growth rather than just incremental change.

The Five Pillars of the Grant Method

I started to think about all the habits that I know make my life better and began grouping them into categories. After testing this concept in my own life, I identified five key areas that, when focused on consistently, lead to immediate and lasting transformation. I call this the The Grant Method(GM)—five essential pillars for a better life:

  1. Health & Fitness – Taking care of your body through exercise and proper nutrition. This improves energy, mood, confidence, and overall well-being.

  2. Restful, Restorative Sleep – Quality sleep changes everything. Even one good night makes a difference, but consistently getting enough sleep transforms how we handle stress, anxiety, and daily challenges.

  3. Learning & Growth – Reading, studying, and acquiring new knowledge keeps our minds sharp and helps us advance in our careers, relationships, and personal goals.

  4. Relationships & Social Connections – Meaningful interactions with family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers boost our happiness, confidence, and motivation.

  5. Faith & Spirituality – For me, staying close to God through prayer and engaging with my faith community brings peace, purpose, and guidance.

These five pillars work together to create an upward spiral. When you focus on them consistently, your motivation increases, your habits reinforce each other, and your overall life satisfaction skyrockets.

The Immediate Impact of The Grant Method

Unlike some self-improvement strategies that take months to show results, the GM has an immediate impact. The moment you take action in one of these five areas, you feel the difference. That success then motivates you to take another step, which leads to even more momentum.

This isn’t a “get-rich-quick” or “instant happiness” scheme. It’s a practical, get-better-now approach. The more you invest in these five areas, the more you’ll see improvements in your career, finances, relationships, and overall sense of peace and purpose.

I’m actively applying the Grant Method in my life, refining it, and sharing it with others to help them live their best life today.
